There are four crucial areas to master for small business social media success. Let’s get started!

1. Social Media Engagement

When was the last time you were on social media? Why were you there? Probably, you had a few minutes of free time, and you wanted to see what your family and friends were up to. Do you remember seeing any ads? Probably, no. Or maybe you saw an ad and skipped it immediately. You probably thought that was a distraction. So, the first rule is do not be a distraction! Do not try to sell on social media. When I say this, my clients get confused. They go: But what do you mean don’t sell? Wait! That’s why we are on social media.

Social media is not a place to sell. It’s a place to build relationships. I promise you will be successful on social media if you follow just this simple rule. That said those relationships could turn into sales but here is the caveat! You must be patient.

On social media, a relationship means a like, comment, share, private message, link click, or a simple question, in other words, any type of engagement.

2. Getting Social Media Followers

Patience means most people will not buy your products or services after seeing your post. If you are lucky (we will define that too), they will look at your profile, check out some of the posts, read your bio, and then do nothing. Then the algorithm will show another post from your profile (or your ads will find them). This time, if you are lucky, they may decide to follow (you will get a notification). After seeing your posts for some time, they may message you or go to your website and explore more. If they trust the company and like the products, you may get your sale! But keep in mind this may take weeks or maybe months, depending on the price point.

3. Small Business Social Media Content

I do not believe there is luck. To me, everything has a reason. In this case, luck is the quality of the posts and targeting. Remember, on social media, there is always competition because the users have limited time, and they are shown several posts in one session. Why would they pay attention to yours? How would you get their attention? Well, there is some research and logic behind it. But if you know your audience and create content that they find valuable, you will get lucky, and your small business’s social media will grow exponentially.

Value could be a piece of information, fun content, or coupon code. For example, if you have a gym, instead of telling you how your trainers are awesome, educate your audience about muscles, workouts, or injuries. That’s a reason to follow your small business on social media.

Give them a reason to follow!

4. Being Authentic

In the current market, businesses with memorable stories can differentiate themselves from the competition on social media. Younger generations, such as Millennials and Gen Z, seek authentic connections. Even B2B companies now recognize the importance of storytelling as a primary factor in their success. In fact, Sir Kensington’s (a ketchup brand) came up with a made-up story just to differentiate themselves.

All things being equal, a business with a story would stand out! So, you had better to tell your story! What is your business all about? What does your business stand for? What is your business’s unique tone and character? Small business social media success is highly correlated with authenticity. Be brave, and it will pay off.

Bonus: Social Media Ads

Advertise! Promote your posts. I know some of you don’t like ads, find it complicated to run ads on social media, or have done that before and didn’t get a return. But believe me, if you do everything right, it will pay off. Sadly, social media has changed over the years. The competition has become fierce and the algorithms favor promoted content. Your followers might not see your content unless it is boosted/promoted. It is a waste of time to create all that content, doing everything right but not to reach your audience.
